本科UW,硕士NUS,PhD UIUC,目前工作在Purdue. C- is the minimum passing grade for a lecture (300/400 level) at UW and NUS(NTU) but not necessarily at other US or even NAIS universities - some schools are more strict than others, with regard to grading. For undergraduate work at these two institutions if you got less than B in a course then there was an explanation written by your professor on why we gave you this grade, which also went into your permanent transcript.

At UIUC my grad classes were all A's except one which was a B+ because I thought it would be impossible to get anything lower than that from x Professor y whom everyone said was the toughest prof on campus(which he was) so of course I wanted to push his buttons as hard as possible. In hindsight I wish I had been a bit less stupid and just tried harder, but whatever - I am who I am! At Purdue my first year of grad school, 2 courses were B+, another B, and one C. The C was very much me - I did all the reading and assignments but I couldn't quite get to grips with the material due to personal reasons, hence the low grade.

I took this course again the next term and pulled an A+ out of the hat. With regards to PhD level coursework, only one term was below a B and it was due to the same reason as mentioned above - lack of personal motivation rather than any failure on the part of the professor to teach properly. Again I re-took the class and earned an A. So yes, overall I would say that C is a passing grade 但it would depend on what university you were at.
