If you want to stay longer， you can apply to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) online to have your visa extended or changed by choosing one of these options： Extend onshore as a visitor; Change to an employer-sponsored temporary skilled visa；Change to student visa; Change to partner visa. You may also be able to change directly from another Australian Visa Class into this Visa class.
If someone wants to visit friends or relatives but their travel is likely to take more than six months， they should get a long Stay Visitor visa（Subclass 676）before applying for a 600 Visitor Visa. This will allow them to live in Australia without restrictions during their entire trip. A subclass 676 Visa will cost $540， while a 600 Visitor Visa costs no more than $85 for adults and $170 for children aged between five and fifteen years old. Both types of visa can be applied for at DIAC offices overseas. Applications sent through mail need to accompany a payment of $350 to cover the processing fee plus postage fees. There's a service called Online Form Processing which enables applicants with electronic signatures to pay only $90 processing fee and it does not require any additional postage charges either. Applicants who do not qualify for the visa may request for a refund. In addition， there is a waiver scheme where visitors coming to visit family members can apply for exemption from immigration charges provided that they meet specified conditions. Note： From November 20th， 2010 onwards all applications will be processed electronically rather than manually and most applications will receive decision within four weeks.
