Amherst is one of the few schools that actually cares about students and their success. All the professors know your name (in large classes too) and want you to succeed. The amount of support granted to students by faculty and staff members are unparalleled in comparison with other schools.

The small size also means that you get to really know your classmates on a personal level, so it makes it very easy to make friends because everyone is nice and you can find people with similar interests as easily as picking up a book at the library. It’s an extremely safe community, especially for LGBTQ+ individuals - there have always been and will always be people who are not only willing but happy to talk openly about issues concerning identity and gender. There isn’t a lot of discrimination as long as you keep quiet and don’t demand to be heard; however, if people want to learn more about what you’re dealing with or open up conversations with you, they will be there for you100%.

Academically, Amherst is great preparation for graduate school, and many students feel prepared and confident enough to enter any field after graduation. Most students I know who graduated from top undergraduate institutions were slightly intimidated coming into our rigorous and challenging curriculum, but almost all left feeling empowered knowing they could take on anything life might throw them as a result of their education here. In fact, my experiences at Amherst taught me how to be confident even when I didn't feel like I knew everything, which has translated well into my professional life.
