A- is above 3.5 out of 4.0 或者above 4.0 out of 5.0 on the scale used by most colleges in the U.S. (with a few notable exceptions).
The top tier of grades generally translates to "strong student" or "high achieving student," but even students with these grades are unlikely to ever get into a top 5% university like MIT, Stanford etc.
In international schools we use PISA and TIMSS tests for the top end of our academic achievement distribution as opposed to GCSEs/A Level results. We do not have any students with perfect scores so grading does require some subjectivity. However, where possible we try to be consistent between students and within subjects to make sure that no one’s grade is unfairly high or low. At the end of the day it's up to teachers to know their students well and to make good judgments about what they need to work hard on. Students who are working at the top of their ability often will not score highly on standardized tests because those don't measure everything an advanced student knows! And conversely, some students may outperform you on standardised assessments if you taught them all the things that were measured, though they may not show you how much they knew outside those parameters until after class!!
Standardized testing is very useful in making comparisons across vast populations of students in large numbers of different countries and contexts, but it can never tell us EVERYTHING(especially when it comes to ‘gifted’ students)and should therefore NOT be the only basis upon which we judge students, teachers or schools!!
